Trends continue in this week’s top domain name sales

Looking at this weeks reported top domain name sales, I noticed a couple of trends continuing in the list. TripleCreditReport.com was sold for $240,000, one of the highest ever 3 word domain sales, though not the only one in the top 10 - BetTheDerby.com fetching $25,000 and demonstrating even more that domains with 1 or 2 valuable keywords in them can still go for lots of dollars as long as the name as a whole is memorable. We also had another domain sale featuring the number ‘2′ stading in for the word ‘to’ - Go2Security.com. I have a whole batch of names with 2 in them : loans2xs.com , homes2xs.com etc. and every week I’m more certain that they are going to make me some serious money down the line.

Immortality Pills and the Value of ‘futuristic’ domain names

Recently I bought the domain name immortalitypills.com and a clutch of names related to it.  I was happy with my purchase, in fact, I was delighted.  The day after I registered this domain, the Pope gave an address in which he warned of the imminant dangers of an immortality pill!  I felt as though I had been truly blessed!

However, some fellow domain name resellers poo-pooed the value of this, and indeed, any domain names based on technology or scientific advance that isn’t clearly right around the corner of their instant profit noses.  Indeed, one told me that I would have to live forever to get rich from this name…This set me thinking about whether my initial enthusiasm for the domain was justified, and whether such futuristic names have any value whatsoever.

As far as immortalitypills.com is concerned, I have high hopes that it might become immensely valuable because, even if scientists never discover an ‘immortality pill’, in the opinion of many experts there is a real possibility that life extension drugs will be devoloped in the next decades and it is quite possible or even probable that these drugs will be tagged with the generic name of immortality pills. At the least, I think this domain would be a catchy and revelent name already for a company selling anti-aging pills.

Lets look at it logically :

O.k, there are no immortality pills to sell at the moment, so does that mean the domain name has zero value? I’m relatively new to this industry but is not the whole attraction of the domain buisness that you are investing in virtual real estate?

I’m not a scientist but I take a keen interest in the immortality/transhumanism debate.

What are the chances of scientists developing drugs/pills in the next 25 years that will increase lifespan? From what I’ve read, a 90 - 100 % chance.

What is the probability that these pills will acquire the generic name ‘immortality pills’? I would guess anything from 50 to 100%.

What is the probability that these pills will immediately become one of the most, if not the most, sought after and expensive commodities in the history of human kind (and perfectly suited to be sold/marketed over the internet)? 100%, no brainer.

Admittedly a futuristic domain like this is hard to evaluate conventionally.  Although it might be low value now, in terms of an end user, if scientists were to announce the discovery of an immortality pill or drug and that this sooner or later would be sold (very expensively) on the internet, then surely the domain name would be worth a fortune.  If sleepingpills.com is valued at $300,000 what would immortalitypills.com be worth?

So I would hope there would be some value in it to a buyer as a long term investment, perhaps a bit speculative, but with the rewards potentially huge.
